SpaceX will send NASA astronauts to the International Space Station on five more missions by 2030, and the agency will pay $1.4 billion for those flights, NASA announced. Elon Musk’s company has been delivering astronauts to the ISS using the Crew Dragon capsule since 2020.

In 2014, NASA awarded large contracts to SpaceX and Boeing to build capsules that will carry astronauts to and from the ISS. SpaceX has developed the capsule and flown several missions over the past two years, while Boeing has had problems with the CST-100 Starliner capsule. Boeing will attempt another test flight in February 2023.

The cost of the contract called CCtCap between NASA and SpaceX reaches 4.9 billion dollars. A total of 14 missions are included in this contract, covering almost the entire decade until about 2030.

Under the big contract, NASA will also be able to get new services from SpaceX, the company that has become NASA’s first private partner certified to carry NASA astronauts into space and return them to Earth.
