Anka Todoni reached the 1/8 finals of the “WTA 125” category tournament in San Luis Potosí, beating the third favorite of the competition from Mexico.

Anka Todoni defeated Sara Sorribes Tormo after a match that lasted four hours and 14 minutes

Ranked 226th in the world, Todoni entered the main draw after defeating Katarina Zawatska (179 WTA, first seed in the qualification).

In the first round, Todoni won against the Iberian Sara Sorribes Tormo (52 WTA and 3rd favorite of the competition in Mexico), score 5-7, 7-5, 7-6(5).

The Romanian’s victory against the former WTA No. 32 came after four hours and 14 minutes of play, one of the longest matches in the history of women’s tennis.

The player from Spain is used to this type of matches, having played several matches of almost four hours during her career.

  • The athlete from Romania will play in the 1/8 finals with the Argentinian Julia Riera (119 WTA).
  • Thanks to her performance in San Luis Potosi, Anka Todoni is ranked 216th in the WTA Live ranking (a career best).
  • Also on Tuesday, Iryna Bara (153 WTA) was defeated by Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto (51 WTA, favorite 2 and defending champion) with a score of 6-1, 6-2 after one hour and 22 minutes.
  • Qualifying in the 1/8 finals is rewarded with $2,000 and 15 WTA points, while being in the first round offers $1,250 and 1 WTA point.

The San Luis Open, a WTA 125 tournament, will be held from March 25 to 31. It is played on clay and the total prize money awarded is $115,000. The champion for the title is Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
