Lewis Hamilton will go to Ferrari at the end of the 2024 season, and Mercedes would find a suitable replacement for the Briton. As Marca reports, Toto Wolff will bring world circuit veteran Fernando Alonso to the team.

The brand reports that Fernando Alonso will replace Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes

Hamilton’s decision brings with it a number of changes in the world of Formula 1. Mercedes is set to bring George Russell as a partner for 2025, while Marca journalists talk about the safe option represented by Fernando Alonso.

Now 42 years old (turning 43 on July 29), Fernando is undoubtedly one of the most experienced drivers on the grid.

He is a two-time world champion (titles won in 2005 and 2006 with Renault) and the rivalry with Hamilton is so well known to fans of the Grand Circus (the two shared a lot when they were teammates at McLaren).

Alonso’s contract with Aston Martin expires at the end of the 2024 season, making the transition even easier.

During testing in Bahrain (last week), Oscar Piastre (McLaren driver) was also clear about this possibility.

“Alonso will go to Mercedes,” Piastri said bluntly.

The Iberian press also mentions that Piastre’s agent is Mark Webber (former Red Bull driver) and that he has a very good relationship with Fernando Alonso.

Former F1 champion in 2009 (with BrawnGP), Jenson Button also claims that Alonso’s option would be the best for Mercedes at the moment.
