Beatrice Edwige (Ferencvaros): “If you show me the color of your skin, it means you have something with me”
After the match, Beatrice Edwige (Budapest player) accused a Rapid fan of racism after he allegedly “pointed his finger at the color of his skin”.
“First of all, we are not talking about all Rapid fans, I don’t want to put them all in one category. Some of them were extraordinary, there was a very good atmosphere in the hall, but, as everywhere, there are idiots, and that boy, in my opinion, is an idiot.
During the match, I don’t know exactly what that means, but he showed me this (no, he puts his hand up to his face), he showed my face. If you show me the color of your skin, it means that you have something with me.
I let it go during the match because there was no time, but at the end I went up to him because I wanted to ask him what the problem was. He told me: “No, I didn’t say anything, I didn’t do anything.” You have to admit what you did!
Again, I don’t want to lump all Rapid fans into one pot. He was just a stupid boy, and handball doesn’t deserve it, I don’t deserve it. I really hope this person never walks into a gym again. From my perspective, he’s an idiot who doesn’t deserve to be a Rapids fan.
Every time I’ve seen your arena, I’ve seen it’s a great atmosphere, but this man doesn’t deserve to be called a Rapid fan.” – Beatrice Edwidgequoted by DigiSport.
Rapid considers the accusations of racism against the fan “completely unfounded”.
In a statement posted on social media, CS Rapid Bucharest gave their point of view regarding the episode in the multi-purpose hall. The Giulesti group said that “touching the cheek with a finger has absolutely no racist connotations”.
“After the end of the game, the French athlete accused a gesture with racist connotations directed against her, a gesture by a Rapidist fan, which happened during the game.
At the end of the game, CS Rapid technical director Rares Fortuneanu spoke to the French player in person to find out what happened, as the accused gesture was not seen by anyone else when it was made.
In a conversation with Rares Fortuneanu, Beatrice Edwidge stated that the gesture, which is considered racist, was to touch the cheek with a finger, Rapid adds.
Rares Fortunianu explained to the French handball player that the corresponding gesture has absolutely no racist connotation in the local culture, explaining its true meaning.
Club Sportiv Rapid does not encourage any kind of racist behavior and Rapidist fans have shown impeccable behavior in all Champions League matches over the past two seasons.
Thus, SC “Rapid” considers accusations of racism to be absolutely groundless, even if they are made against one fan of our club.” – CS Rapid Bucharest.
