Just a few days ago, Adrian Mutu was appointed as the coach of CFR Cluj. The goal set by the leaders of the formation from Gruia is clear for the former home of the tricolor: qualification for the Europa League groups.
Adrian Mutu must win the Romanian Cup and try to lead CFR part to the Europa League groups
Mutu made a great debut for Gruia with a 4-1 win over FC Voluntari, and the Transylvanians are currently 2nd in the Superliga, level on points with Rapidul (39 each – 11 behind leaders FCSB).
When asked about the goals that Mutu has to fulfill at CFR, Cristi Balai (president of the former Romanian champion) gave a clear speech.
Adrian Mutu’s minimum goal is to win the Romanian Cup, a trophy that will allow the Transylvanians to qualify for the Europa League preliminary round.
“It would be a good season if we got into the European Cup groups. The Europa League would be ideal. The Champions League, if we imagine that we have the ability, the possibility for a team from the Romanian league to get into the Champions League groups would ideally be a great achievement for Romanian football, but at the moment I don’t think we deserve it” – Christy Balayfor Fanatik.
After 23 matches of the current competitive season, CFR Cluj is 11 points behind leaders FCSB in second place.
However, it should be taken into account that after entering the playoffs, the distance will decrease: the points will be halved.
This weekend, CFR will play away to Petrolul (Saturday, February 3, 5:00 p.m.), while FCSB will face them on Monday, February 5, at 8:00 p.m. at Farul Constanța at the National Arena.
