Marc Overmars, banned from football – Was involved in a scandal with sexual undertones

Initially suspended only in the Netherlands, Overmars was subject to the same sanctions worldwide by FIFA.

In November 2023, Overmars was banned from any activity related to Dutch football for a year after he sent sexual photos and videos to female employees during his time as sporting director of Ajax Amsterdam.

He resigned in February 2022 after admitting he had sent a “series of inappropriate messages” to some of his colleagues and said he was “ashamed” of his behaviour.

However, a month later he was appointed technical director of the Belgian club “Royal Antwerp”. The Sports Court of the Netherlands (ISR) decided to ban the former player from holding any position in an organization related to the Dutch Football Association for two years, one of which will be suspended.

“KNVB is obliged to share this sanction with the Disciplinary Committee of FIFA. It then decides whether that sanction should also be applied internationally. It has now been done and the Disciplinary Committee has decided to extend the sanctions,” the Dutch Football Federation told AFP in an interview on Wednesday.

Marc Overmars has been Ajax’s sporting director since 2012 and has played a role in the Amsterdam club’s recent successes, including the 2019 UEFA Champions League semi-finals and the 2017 Europa League final.

A famous footballer of the 1990s, Marc Overmars won Europe’s most prestigious club trophy with Ajax in 1995. He also won three Dutch championship titles. After moving to England’s Arsenal, he won the Premier League championship in 1998 and was sold to Barcelona in 2000.

As part of the Netherlands national team, he played at the World Championships in 1994 and 1998, writes News.ro.
