Benone Lazar, the former owner of International Curtea de Argeș, a team in the first division of Romania in the 2009-2010 season, recalled his short but extensive experience in football in an interview with Gazeta Sporturilor. The businessman did not stay in the phenomenon for long, he retired more than 10 years ago and opened his own business in transport.

“I am the only person. Some people think that I have something on my mind, but I invest in football because I have nothing to do with it,” Benone Lazar said decisively in the summer of 2009.

This was the time when the International was heading into its first and only year on the front stage. Romanian football has just chosen, at least declaratively, a new “broken arm”.

Benone Lazar, “confession” on GSP.ro: “I saw that this was not my world. Besides, I was scared when Penescu was arrested.”

Almost 15 years later, Benon Lazar filters things much more carefully. Heading a transport company with a turnover of 42 million euros in 2021, Lazar explains in a rare interview what made him leave football and the damage he chose.

“I also watch TV, Romanian football is much weaker than before, both in my time and in our time.

I saw that this is not mine, this is not my world, I was in my business, in my multinational corporations, a completely different mentality.”
