Nick Kyrgios says he won’t be playing tennis for too long: ‘One or two more years’

A former ATP No. 13, Kyrgios underwent knee surgery earlier in the year and has since missed numerous tournaments with wrist problems.

Nick, 28, played his only match of 2023 on June 13 in Stuttgart, 5-7, 3-6 against Yibing Wu. The Australian has since dropped out of the ATP rankings and now says he is “exhausted” by the ongoing recovery process.

“If it was up to me, I wouldn’t really want to play anymore, to be honest. I have to keep playing. I still have a lot to offer, but I don’t feel like playing anymore.

I’m tired. I have had three surgeries so far. I am only 28 years old, I always wanted to have a family and not suffer. When I get up I can’t walk without pain. It’s hard work.

I just want to play another year or two, be at the top and retire on my own terms. I wouldn’t want to have another surgery or anything like that.

I think I still have a chance to have one or two good years and that’s it. I think I’ll be at peace with everything I’ve achieved and I’ll have to say to everyone who wants me to play more, “You’ll have to accept the fact that I’m not playing anymore.”

That period of 2019 (when he had suicidal thoughts – no) accelerated my burnout and almost pushed me to end my career a little earlier. If I’d had a normal career, I don’t think I’d have felt this way, but those two years have accentuated my age, I think. It’s just hard. I’m tired. I’m tired of playing tennis,” Nick Kyrgios on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast.

The capricious Nick Kyrgios has won 7 ATP tournaments in his career, collected $12,486,696 in prize money in tennis alone, and his best result at a major competition was the 2022 Wimbledon final (he lost in four sets to Novak Djokovic).
