​Sorana Kirstya respected her favorite status and qualified for the second round of the US Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of the year, after defeating the host representative.

The 30th seed at Flushing Meadows, Sorana defeated Kayla Day (91 WTA) in the first round 6-2, 6-3.

The game lasted an hour and 15 minutes, and Kirstya was the player who dictated the pace.

The Romanian registered 26 game-winners (only 9 against the American), was very good at the net (earning 12 points from 16 attempts) and was excellent at returning (four breaks in total).

• In the second round, Sorana will meet with Anna Kalinska (89 WTA). The Russian beat Kateryna Sinyakova (49 WTA, Czech Republic), score 6-4, 6-2.

• Kirstya and Kalinska previously met twice and shared victories: the Russian won in Cincinnati-2020, and the Romanian – in Indian Wells-2022.

• By advancing to the second round, Sorana Kirstea secured a prize of $123,000 and 70 points in the WTA ranking.
