
Russia’s Rodion Amirov, a Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL team) prospect, has died of brain cancer a year and a half after being diagnosed, his agent said Monday.

“Once he heard the news, he refused to see the negative side and decided to enjoy each day with the same positive attitude he displayed throughout his hockey career,” agent Dan Milstein explained in a statement.
Rodion Amirov was selected by Toronto with the 15th pick in the 2020 draft. He played the last seasons for Ufa Salavat Yulaev (KHL), but did not play in the 2022-2023 season due to chemotherapy, writes News.ro.
President Brendan Shanahan spoke of the “tragic loss” in a written statement shared on Twitter, renamed X. The team boss added that “it is incredibly sad to see a young man with such great potential leave us so early.”
