The second set was uneventful as the former Grand Slam winner cruised to a 6-0 decider against Lorenzo Sonego.
The former world number one has 48 trophies to his name, including three Grand Slam titles, and won tournaments in Aix-en-Provence and Nottingham this year.
In the second round, Andy Murray will meet the winner of the Canadian Felix Auger-Alisasim (12 ATP) and the Australian Max Purcell (78 ATP).
The National Bank Open Presented by Rogers takes place this year in Toronto from August 7 to 13, is part of the ATP 1000 category, offers a total prize pool of $6,600,000, and the title champion is Spain’s Pablo CarreƱo Busta.
