American Kyle Anderson from Minnesota Timberwolves received Chinese citizenship

The 29-year-old American from New York is the latest elite athlete to obtain Chinese citizenship through naturalization and the first basketball player to do so, News.ro reports.

“(Anderson) received Chinese citizenship this morning and met with Yao Ming, president of the Chinese Basketball Association,” the CBA (Chinese Basketball Association) said in a post on its official Weibo account.

The citizenship could allow Anderson to play for China at the FIBA World Cup, which starts on August 25 in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia, as well as the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

FIBA allows teams to have a naturalized player on their roster. Chinese media reported that Anderson’s maternal grandmother was born in Jamaica to a Chinese father and a Jamaican mother.

China had earlier announced an 18-man squad for the World Cup, but FIBA said the final squads would only be confirmed after a technical meeting to be held before the start of the tournament.
