The Mexican overtook Charles Leclerc (Ferrari, started from pole position) and Max Verstappen (RedBull, current world champion).
George Russell (Mercedes), Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) and Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) also scored points.
The safety car appeared on the track from the first lap after Yuki Tsunoda (AlphaTauri) drove into the parapet and lost a tire.
