Petra Kvitova defeated Elena Rybakina in the final of the Miami Open and won the ninth WTA 1000 title of her career. To the question of how she manages to stay in the top at the age of 33, the athlete from the Czech Republic gave an amazing answer.
Petra Kvitova, less training and more rest
The 2011 and 2014 Wimbledon champion Kvitova (10 WTA) said that now she trains less and prefers to rest more.
“When I trained a lot, I started to feel that tennis was tiring me, I lost concentration. Then, in real matches, I no longer felt the same satisfaction from the game. So I felt the need for a break, I feel like I don’t have to prepare every day.
The most important thing is to enjoy the matches and I find that if I prepare less, I get a lot of rewards. Maybe I’ll drop training altogether and just focus on the games.
Throughout my career I have worked hard and many times felt empty, without energy. I tried to work a lot with different coaches in the hope that I would improve my game. But this work to exhaustion did not pay off in my case.
Maybe also about something mental, I don’t understand. Of course, work gives results, it helps, but when you are overworked, it can create more problems for you.
I think that my whole career is like a beautiful dream. When I was little and had fun with my father on the tennis court, I never thought that I would have the performances that I achieved later. I won Wimbledon twice, I won many other important titles, I am proud of myself.
I don’t even know if I will get results or what results. Now of course I need a break. I will go home to rest, then I will start preparing for the slag. You will have to get used to the surface, to moving on clay.
But I have no expectations, I do not set certain goals. I’m happy with my performance and I hope to spend the next months as well as possible” – Petra Kvitovain an interview for WTA Insider.
