Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), the seven-time world champion, has been cleared ahead of Sunday’s season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix to compete with a nose piercing despite the current ban.
In a decision released to the press, the FIA commissioners said they had “received a medical report from the Mercedes team doctor asking for a disqualification”. “After consulting with the FIA medical delegate, I have agreed,” the statement said.
Last year, Alex Wurz, president of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA), said Formula 1 could ban drivers from wearing jewelery during races, but the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) could decide to “sweeten” the application of the regulation.
Under the new F1 rules, drivers are banned from wearing jewelery in their cars during races for safety reasons, and Hamilton has already been stepped on in two races in 2022.
