Tournament of Champions winner Garcia (4th seed) was defeated in straight sets by American Madison Keys (23 WTA) in the second round (she had a bye in the inaugural round), 7-5, 6-4.
Last week, Karolina got past Karolina Mukhova in the Round of 16 in Doha, but lost to Maria Sakkari.
In the round of 16, Keys will play the winner of the match between Amanda Anisimova (35 WTA) and Victoria Azarenka (14 WTA, seeded 15th).
The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships runs from February 19 to 25 on hard, is part of the “WTA 1000” category and has a total prize pool of $2,788,468. Simona Halep won the tournament in 2015 and 2020, and the last edition went to Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia.
