George Kosac (55 years old) won the presidential election of the Romanian Tennis Federation, which took place on Friday at the National Tennis Center in Bucharest, after the other four candidates, Rezvan Itu, Dumitru Heradeu, Tudor Napoleon Spartak Iacov and Mihai Rusu. withdrew from the election race.
George Kosac, the new president of the Romanian Tennis Federation
Kosak received 142 votes, the other two were declared invalid. At the beginning of the General Assembly elections on Friday, 157 of the total number of 421 affiliated members of the Romanian Tennis Federation were present, but by the time the vote was taken, 13 presidents had left.
According to the Statute of the Romanian Tennis Federation, which was adopted during the General Assembly in the presence of representatives of the Ministry of Sports and the Olympic and Sports Committee of Romania, the mandate of the new president is 4 years.
This was the third appointment of the election, the other two on 27 October 2022 and 14 December 2022 were postponed due to lack of quorum. A quorum for decision-making requires two-thirds of the total number of voting members. At the first General Election Assembly, 46 were present, and at the second only 26 out of a total of 421 affiliated members. According to the FRT’s bylaws, at the third appointment of an election, a quorum is no longer considered and a vote can be taken even if only one affiliated member is present.
The position of President of the Romanian Tennis Federation was vacant following the resignation of Ion Ciriac on July 26, 2021. From that date, the FRT interim president was George Kosak.
On June 19, 2019, Ion Ciriak was elected President of the Romanian Tennis Federation, having received 32 votes in an extraordinary general election. At that time, he stated that he would remain in this position for only six months, during which his goals would be to change the status of the FRT and clarify the situation with the financial means of the MTS.
For Kosac, this is the third mandate as president of the Romanian Tennis Federation. He was also elected in 2013 and 2017, but the second mandate did not expire due to legal problems regarding the registration of tribunal members. For this reason, the Ministry of Youth and Sports cut off funding and the FRT was forced to organize another election in 2019, which was won by Ion Cyriak, according to Agerpres.
