Yulia Putintseva’s 6-2, 4-6, 3-6 loss in the first round of the 2023 Australian Open brought bad news for Sorana Kirstya, who was fined for refusing to interact with the media after the match.

>>> Important drops in the WTA ranking for Romanian players after the Australian Open

Sorana Kirstea did not follow the code of conduct imposed by the Australian Open 2023 regarding relations with the press

Sorana’s defeat against Yulia Putintseva (6-2, 4-6, 3-6) was hard enough for the Romanian, who refused to give any interviews at the end of the game.

Although she played very well in the first set, Sorana Kirstja lost her rhythm in the second set when the match was interrupted by rain. After returning to the court, the player from Romania was suspended, and Yulia Putintseva won 2 and 3 sets, advancing to the next round of the competition.

The disappointment was great for Sorana, who did not cooperate with the press in any way.

As ProSport reports, Sorana Kirstea was fined $10,000, and after participating in this year’s Australian Open, the Romanian will be left with a check for $63,724.

In addition, Sorana Kirstja will also leave the WTA top 50, but there is a possibility that she will also leave the world top 60 depending on other results recorded at the Australian Open.

Know:

  • Romania has already lost four players from the singles table: Jacqueline Christian, Ana Bohdan, Sorana Kirstea and Patricia Sieg, exiting the Australian Open in the first round.

Australian Open 2023 will be held from January 16 to 29. The reigning champions are Ashley Barty (retired) and Rafael Nadal (retired).
