The athlete of Romanian origin made a great start to the match and won the first set in just 23 minutes of play with a score of 6:0.
Slovakia fought back, took advantage of Reducanu’s sprained ankle, and won the second leg 7-5.
Emma received medical attention, but was unable to continue the match and withdrew before the third set.
It remains to be seen how serious the 2021 US Open champion’s injury is and whether she will have time to recover to take part in the Australian Open (January 16-29).
Victoria Kuzmova (134 WTA) will play in the quarterfinals of the tournament in Auckland (New Zealand) with Danka Kovinich (60 WTA).
The ASB Classic (WTA Auckland) runs from January 2 to 8 on hard, is part of the WTA 250 category, offers a total of $259,303 in prize money, and is championed (as of 2020) by Serena Williams.
