The hymn “God Save the King” is sung after 72 years

For the past 70 years, at every final tournament in which the British national team has participated, the anthem “God Save The Queen” has been sung.

Monday’s match against Iran saw the first in the 21st century.

The group, led by Gareth Southgate, performed the anthem “God Save The King”, a version of which was first heard at the 1950 World Cup (Brazil), when George VI was in command.

At that World Cup, England were eliminated from the group stage.

This aspect resulted from the death of Queen Elizabeth II this autumn and the coronation of King Charles III.
