British comedian Joe Lissett destroyed £10,000 notes to protest former England captain David Beckham’s decision to take on the role of ambassador for Qatar at the World Cup, saying on Monday it was a hoax and that he would never destroy the money, reports said Reuters.
Beckham, who played for Manchester United and Real Madrid as a midfielder, works in Qatar, which has been criticized for its treatment of foreign workers, LGBTQ+ rights and restrictive social laws.
Last week, Joe Lissette said he would donate money to charity if Beckham agreed to end his relationship with the World Cup 2022 organizer or part with the money before the start of the tournament.
On Sunday, he appeared to put the money in a wood chipper, but on Monday said he didn’t actually shred the money and that it was donated to an LGBTQ+ rights charity.

“It was an empty threat meant to get people talking,” Lisette said.
Beckham did not respond to the British comedian’s ultimatum.
Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar and World Cup organizers have warned visitors against public displays of affection, but say anyone, regardless of sexual orientation or background, can be invited to the event.
The country also denies allegations of worker abuse and bribery to obtain organizational rights.
