Oradea Arena, a new multi-purpose hall in the city, will host a match between the women’s tennis teams of Romania and Hungary (November 11-12) as part of the play-offs for the Billie Jean King Cup (formerly the Federation Cup), organized by the Romanian Tennis Federation together with Oradea City Hall .
The Billie Jean King Cup will be held in Oradea: Romania – Hungary
According to the press release of the Oradea City Hall, the meeting took place on a court with a hard surface, which, at the request of the Romanian players, will be installed on top of the existing parquet. Five matches will be played, four singles and one doubles, reports Agerpres.
“If until now the Federation organized Davis Cup and Federation Cup competitions in Galata, Bucharest, Sibiu, Constanta and Cluj-Napoca, now Oradea has a modern gym that can compete with any other gym in Europe. I can say that in terms of dependencies it is even more modern than the one in Cluj. We are talking about today’s hall, which can host a world competition at any time. I am convinced that the event will be organized at the highest level.” – said George KozakPresident of the Romanian Tennis Federation (FRT).
According to him, the composition of the party will be announced three weeks before, and the tickets will be put on sale in the following period. The organizers are counting on the presence in the hall of the former tennis player Ilie Nestase, as well as Simona Halep, who, however, finished the competitive season.
Oradea Mayor Florin Birta emphasized that it is important to organize such a competition in Oradea, events that bring popularity to the country and the city are supported by the municipality.
“It is clear that we needed the necessary infrastructure to have a multifunctional hall where large-scale sports competitions can be held. Now we have it and want to host as many competitions as possible.” said Mayor Florin Birta.
Romania and Hungary have met nine times in the Federation Cup so far, and our team has achieved eight successes, the most recent of which was a 2-1 win in Budapest in 2014 in Group I of the Europe-Africa zone thanks to successful victories by Sorana Kirstja and the pair of Iryna Begu/ Monica Niculescu, Timea Babos (won against Simona Halep), which brought home a point.
Hungary’s only victory was recorded in 1993 in England with a score of 2-1.
