At the recent European Women’s Polo Championships, three of the top six teams competed against Greek coaches. The Greek polo coaching community abroad has twenty members. From China to England and from Australia to Germany, the wet track gives … confidence in the professionalism of our veteran coaches. Our coaches have created the “Greek School”, which is respected in the world sports community.
The rise of Greek polo is reflected not only in the success of our national teams, but also in the credibility that surrounds the Greek coach at the international level. Countries such as China, the Netherlands, Israel, Kuwait, etc. they trust their national teams or academies to the Greeks, and our coaches are in demand from foreign clubs.
The Chinese entrusted Sakis Pavlidis and his team… with the creation of the women’s team of the future. “Of the thirteen gymnasts, eleven left. We are forming a new team with the main goal of the year – to win the Asian Championship. The Chinese were impressed with the lack of infrastructure (pools, etc.) that we have such a high level of polo, as well as the way we work in Greece. They want to take our know-how,” an experienced coach told K.
One country after another gives a vote of confidence to the Greek coaches.
At the recent European Championship, the Israeli team met with the Greek team. Israel’s entry into the top six is largely due to Dimitris Mavrotas: “Polo in Greece is at a high level. The way our coaches work in clubs is a pole of attraction. There are different schools in polo, and Greece has its own, based on a combination of Serbian and Mediterranean schools. Also the Greeks, although we do not believe in it, we are slaves. Especially in our field, coaches are among the most hardworking,” the coach told us.
Sakis Kehagias is currently the coach of Spandau Berlin, he has coached the national teams of Romania (men) and Australia (women) in the past, and has also traveled through Egypt: “The preference is due to the ability of our coaches, who are qualified, but also to the success of our national teams and our clubs,” he told us, and when we asked him how he felt when his team faced the Greek team, he replied: “There are always emotions, especially when you play against the national team of your country. But that’s before the start…”
Lambros Anastasopoulos, President of the Hellenic Association of Water Polo Coaches, attributes the popularity of our coaches to their excellent technical training: “The level is high and highly qualified. This is evidenced, on the one hand, by the great successes at the national and collective level in recent years, and, on the other hand, by the export of Greek technology abroad, where it is in demand. After all, continuous development and technical learning are the main pillars of SEPY through constant training seminars with the world’s leading trainers as lecturers.
