EuroBasket 2022 Germany v Greece 107-96: Blue and White eliminated from the top four

Greece were defeated 107-96 by Germany in the EuroBasket quarter-finals and missed out on a medal challenge. Dimitris Itoudis’ team performed poorly in the second half.

The Germans had an impressive percentage of three-pointers, dominated the rebounds and entered the prize zone. Herbert’s team will play Spain on Friday 16 September to reach the final of the tournament.

The hosts stepped on the gas and were extremely accurate from the 6.75 line. Herbert’s team took a 28–19 lead with Schröder taking advantage of Dimitris Itoudis’ players’ poor perimeter defense.

Greece showed a reaction in the last three minutes of the first period. Giannis Antetokounmpo took the hand of the national team, which was reduced to 28-27 thanks to a strike from his brother Thanasis. The organizers reached 31-27 with a two-pointer by Weiler-Babb.

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s goal cut Greece’s lead to 31-29 at the start of the second period. The Germans made it 36-29 with Lo’s 3-pointer, to which Larentsakis responded in kind. The hosts made the score 42-37 with Timan, while Greece reduced the score to 42-40 thanks to a three-pointer by Larentsakis.

The Blue and Whites drew 44-44 with Papanicolaou and outscored 44-46 thanks to two shots from Giannis Antetokounmpo. Herbert’s team responded with a basket and a foul by Schroeder and then we had consecutive 3-pointers from Obst and Papanicolaou to the Germans 53-51 who went 55-51 with two well-placed shots from Schroeder. Dimitris Itoudis’ team was reduced to a point (55-54) due to a basket and a Dorsey foul.

Germany made it 57-54 with about a minute left in the second quarter. But the end of the period was entirely owned by the blue and white team, which, with Dorsey and an incredible three-pointer from Sluka from the center of the field, reached 57-61.

The hosts came out strong in the third quarter and took a 64-61 lead thanks to a layup by Theis with 6:45 left. The German’s accuracy from the three-point line took Herbert’s team to 72-62 with Wagner and Schroeder.

Greece scored just one point in the first six minutes of the third period. The hosts did what they wanted on the court and beat Thais 77-62. With five straight points from Giannis Antetokounmpo, Greece was reduced to 10 points (79-69) but Germany reached 83-71 in the third period with Theis.

With Giannis Antetokounmpo’s basket, Greece fell to 87-78 at the start of the fourth period. But the hosts found solutions again and made it 92-78 with Wagner’s 3-pointer and Theis’s 2-pointer. Dimitris Itoudis’ team still fell short when the organizers went 103-82 with Strender’s 3-pointer.

Giannis Antetokounmpo was sent off with five minutes left after being charged with a second unsportsmanlike foul. The final minutes of the match were procedural as everything was decided.
