Hours before the US Open main draw, Mr. Novak Djokovic announced that he would not participate in the tournament this year.
The world number six who has not been vaccinated against the coronavirus said last month that he hoped for “good news from the US”, hoping the country would not require citizens to be fully vaccinated against the coronavirus to enter its territory.
However, a recent update on the US Centers for Disease Control (ECDC) website confirmed that the rule will remain in place for the foreseeable future.
On Thursday, the Serbian tennis player confirmed that he would not play in the tournament, which he had previously won three times.
“Unfortunately, this time I will not be able to go to New York for the US Open,” he wrote on Twitter, thanking his supporters and wishing the rest of the athletes good luck.
“I will stay fit and positive and look forward to competing again. See you soon, tennis world,” he said.
Unfortunately, this time I will not be able to go to New York for the US Open. Thanks #NoleFam for your messages of love and support. ❤️ Good luck to my fellow players! I will keep my good shape and positive attitude and look forward to competing again. ???????? See you soon in the tennis world! ????????
