Two and a half years after reaching an agreement to conduct a holistic study aimed at reforming Greek football, the popular sport is back on the government’s agenda. This was confirmed at yesterday’s meeting between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin at Maximos Palace.

The course and implementation of the study, the strained relations of the EPO with the Ministry of Sports and the Super League, the plan to create professional arbitration, the “hot” issue of registering clubs in the GGA registry were all according to the information on the issues raised on the discussion table.

“To the extent that we can intervene, respecting the independence of the federation, we will do everything necessary to leave behind all the problems that we have inherited,” the Prime Minister told the head of the European Confederation, expressing the government’s determination to solve “everything unresolved issues.

Mr. Čeferin thanked the Prime Minister for Greece’s firm position against the creation of a closed European Super League. At the same time, he made it clear that in the coming days, in the four-part committee that has been established between FIFA, UEFA, the Ministry of the Interior and the EPO, UEFA will make every possible effort to resolve any disputes. that have arisen, the last being the issue of the roster, where the federation, as a measure of pressure, threatens to suspend all amateur leagues unless there is a solution that satisfies it.

The deadline for registration of all clubs is August 31, the percentage of clubs that have not yet renewed their registration is high, and the statutory sanctions are non-participation in EPS championships.

The meeting between the two men was followed by a longer meeting at Megaros Maximos, with Minister of State Giorgos Gerapetritis, Deputy Sports Minister Lefteris Avgenakis, UEFA General Secretary Theodoros Theodoridis and the UEFA Director of Football attending. Zvonimir Boban, while Mr. Čeferin met with the President of the Federation, Takis Baltakos, at the EPO office.
