The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is open to the inclusion of new sports in Olympic Games Los Angeles in 2028.
The IOC has submitted proposals to nine federations, including the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), to explore the possibility of including them in the 2028 Olympic program in Los Angeles, according to the dedicated marketing register website.
In addition to motorsport, a possible return of karate is being considered, after being present in Tokyo 2020 and absent in Paris 2024, as well as the presence of breakdancing, softball (softball), cricket, lacrosse (lacrosse). Squash, kickboxing, and flag football are forms of American football played without protection.
The relevant federations have until the end of August to submit an application to the IOC and then wait for a final decision at a conference in Mumbai in mid-2023.
The last Olympics to be held in Tokyo in 2021 cost €12.31 billion, compared to $7.3 billion expected to be spent in 2013, when the venue was announced.
Costs have risen as a result of the postponement due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but despite the ban on fans in the stands, they have been watched by more than three billion viewers on television and digital platforms.
