With the help of a video on his personal Instagram account, Dries Mertens said goodbye to the Napoli fans. The Belgian footballer left the Italian southern club after 9 years.

The 35-year-old is the club’s top scorer with 148 goals. He has played in 396 matches in all competitions.

With Napoli, he won two Italian Cups and one Super Cup. The seasoned soccer player is looking for the next phase of his career.

“Dear Neapolitans, I knew that this day would come, but I did not know how hard it would be to say goodbye. This city accepted me, fell in love and supported me. Records and victories will remain in books, but people will always be in my heart, and I am very happy that my son Ciro was born here.

For 9 years Naples was my land, the city became a part of me and I decided to keep my home in the Persian Gulf. I want to thank everyone. It didn’t end the way I would have liked, but for me it’s not goodbye, but “see you soon”. How much fun we had in Naples…” Dries Mertens said in particular.
