As announced by UEFA, semi-automatic offside technology will be used in the Champions League groups. The refereeing innovation will make its debut at the Super Bowl between Real Madrid and Eintracht Frankfurt on 10 August.
“UEFA is constantly looking for new technological solutions that will improve the sport and assist referees. This innovative system will allow VAR to find decisions faster and more accurately in the event of offside, improving game flow and decision-making consistency. The new system is ready to be installed in all stadiums that will host Champions League matches,” said Roberto Rosetti, Head of UEFA Refereeing.
Data-driven edge detection technology uses special cameras placed throughout the stadium to determine the exact position of players on the pitch, providing referees with accurate information in seconds.
The goal is for the system to generate 29 data points for each player, tracking various body parts to create a 3D skeletal model. Once the final decision is made, AI-based technology converts the images into 3D animations that will be displayed on the screen.
It is estimated that decision time will be reduced from 70 seconds to 25. At the same time, those who watch the match both from TV and from the stadium will be able to see the phases again through 3D visualization, limiting the observed reactions.
