French basketball players who are or will be members of the national team of Russia or Belarus in the future will no longer be eligible to play for the French national team until the end of the war in Ukraine, the French Federation announced on Monday.

“France players and staff will not be available for national teams if they sign with a Russian or Belarusian team while the conflict continues,” the FFBB explained in a press release.

The decision was made on July 28 and “applies also to football players, football players, employees who have already signed a contract with a Russian or Belarusian team.”

The question arose a few days ago when the Frenchmen Livio Jean-Charles (4 matches) in CSKA and Louis Lambeyri (33 matches) in Kazan were signed.

Following the Russian military’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has taken the decision to ban Russia and Belarus from all competitions until further notice. The same goes for the Euroleague Basketball, the organization that governs the two major men’s college competitions, the Euroleague and the Eurocup.
