Imprisoned former Golden Dawn MP Ilias Kasidiaris has been ruled out of the race for the second time in the upcoming June 25 elections, despite his attempt to pass the prohibition provisions of the recent law while running as an independent MP.
The Supreme Court, Division A1, has ruled that Ilias Kasidiaris cannot run in the June 25 elections with the Coalition of Independent Candidates called “Hellenes”, in which he declared himself a candidate for Athens A.
The reasoning of the supreme judges, who considered Kasidiaris’s request to participate in the upcoming elections and rejected it, was based on the recognition that the Coalition of Independent Candidates, with candidates in many regions of the territory, was in fact a party formation under the leadership of Kasidiaris, a party that is, and so such a thing goes against the prohibition of recent legislation.
After all, PASOK, which was the first to apply to the Supreme Court with a request to ban Ilias Kasidiaris from participating in the elections, and Nea Republic, which also submitted a corresponding memorandum.
And for this electoral contest, no memos were presented against the participation of Kasidiaris in the elections by the main opposition party, as was done in the May 21 elections, as well as by other parties moving to the right on the political map (Greek Decision and victory).
At the same time, in addition to banning Ilias Kasidiaris from running as a candidate, the A1 division of the Supreme Court, formed of ten judges based on the latest legislative changes, proceeded to announce all parties, candidates and political formations that do not have problems with legitimacy and, therefore, will participate in the upcoming elections. The decision of the Supreme Court also cut off some small political formations, 12 in total, which for one reason or another did not even fulfill the conditions established by law and therefore could not even pass the appropriate platform for participation in the elections. even before they are considered on formal or substantive issues by the Supreme Court.
Of note is the law adopted by New Democracy and PASOK that bans convicted former AA politicians serving prison terms, such as Ilias Kasidiaris, from running for office in elections for leading and participating in a criminal organization.
Spartans
In a statement through lawyer Vasilikis Pantazis, Ilias Kasidiaris, after the decision of the Supreme Court, said that he would support the nationalist Spartiates party, which had applied for participation in the elections, in the elections. As his lawyer noted, “friends, fans and Ilias Kasidiaris himself will support the Spartans, because the Spartans have always been those who fought for their homeland and freedom.”
