Varoufakis: Cracks in my relationship with Tsipras

The events of the first half of 2015 are brought to life through his interview. Janis Varoufakisin Athens Voice.

When asked about his broken relationship with Alexis Tsipras, the head of MeRA25-Alliance for the Break-up states that “there were a lot of cracks that were needed to break such a close relationship that developed in the context of a beautiful, good, joint struggle. First, when I learned that in my absence, when I was still finance minister, he had accepted the inhuman and destructive primary surpluses demanded by Schäuble. The other was when, shortly after, his “circles” began to spread, which I learned about with … Schäuble. The biggest crack, of course, was on the night of the referendum, when he informed me of his decision to capitulate, overthrowing the people, canceling the mandate of 62% of the citizens.”

Later, “after our paths had already parted, another huge gap was added in August 2018 when, as prime minister, he tied the country with the 4th MoU, but in Orwellian fashion called it “withdrawal from the Memorandum.”

However, when asked about his red lines in a possible collaboration, G. Varoufakis answers as follows: “I don’t believe in red lines. All of us, who believe in simple proportionality, are obliged to make every possible effort for program convergence, starting an honest dialogue, putting aside personal bitterness and “cracks”, in order to study the possibility of developing a common, progressive, government program. All we have asked for is that this dialogue take place before the elections, because the Constitution limits us after the elections to three days during which it is impossible to soberly conduct any serious discussion or any convergence on a joint government program worth implementing in this place”.
