Clear message for Tiranathat, despite Sunday’s elections, Athens is not going to allow the case of the oppression of the national Greek minority to be exhausted in certain public statements.
That is why yesterday afternoon, Mr. Foreign Minister Theoharis Lalakos traveled to Albania to meet with the Mayor of Heimarras Dionysis-Fredi Beleris and Pantelis Kokavesis. It is worth noting that the Greek Ambassador to Albania, Konstantina Kamitsi, has already requested contact with the two detained expatriates, who is in constant contact with their families and lawyers. Ms. Kamitsi finally met Mr. Beleris, with whom she had a long conversation. From a practical point of view, the presence of Mr. Lalakos in Albania is also aimed at considering further actions in the conduct of the case based on the provisions of the Albanian legal system. These actions, which were attended by diplomats on the relevant order of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias, are primarily aimed at recalling all the latest processes and discussions that took place between Athens and Tirana.
According to well-informed sources, Mr. Dendias met with US Ambassador George Tsunis at noon yesterday to explain why Athens has such a hard line on Tirana. It has already been emphasized from Greece across the board, both to European partners and to Washington, that Athens does not intend to accept any discounts on the expatriate rights of Heimarra and the rest of the regions of Albania where members of the National Greek minority live. A strong American influence in Tirana is being activated, so that in the next period of time the government of Rama will act more softly. It is recalled that from the first moment the State Department kept an equal distance on this issue, as it saw a crack in the image of NATO and in general between the two allies who actively supported Ukraine.
It is still unclear whether in the next 24 hours or even days there will be bilateral contacts between Athens and Tirana, actually at the official level, as in Greece at the moment the political heads of the ministries are waiting to be replaced after Monday. It seems that this situation with the upcoming elections in Greece was an important weighty factor for the actions of the Rama government. Thus, the presence of Mr. Lalakos in Albania testifies to the continuity of the state. However, the situation in areas inhabited by Greek emigrants remains tense in some cases. Yesterday (according to himara.gr), emigrant Fioris Belis complained that the Albanian authorities falsely and illegally declared a building belonging to him in the village of Drymades unusable and sent bulldozers to demolish it, saying that this is because during the municipal elections the Belleri combinations were contradicted .
