“The victory of SYRIZA-PS in the May 21 elections will pave the way for a progressive government. AND progressive government led by SYRIZA-PS institutionalizes marriage for all couples, regardless of gender, with full rights, as well as the right to have children“. It was highlighted Alexis Tsipras in his greeting, which was shown on the video, at an event organized since noon in the amphitheater of the Technopolis of the municipality of Athens by the LGBTQI+ group, the Department of Human Rights and Youth SYRIZA against the discrimination faced by LGBTQI+ people.
Mr Tsipras said that when SYRIZA came to power in the country in 2015, “perhaps at the most difficult moment of the post-colonial years, issues of gender and sexual orientation were not among the dominant issues in public debate. The dominant problem was the bankruptcy of the country.” He noted that “we did not shelve them and did not use the difficulties we faced at that time to delay the resolution of issues that, unfortunately, should have been resolved much earlier.” “We did not follow the logic of transference or the logic of getting along with everyone, as the current government does,” he said, “that is, more or less “pink wash” so as not to lose contact with the audience. LGBTI community and against others, however, should not come up with any legislative initiative, so as not to disturb the conservative public that votes for it.”
The President of SYRIZA-PS emphasized that “when we introduced the cohabitation agreement for same-sex couples in parliament, we proved that the government can legislate on things that are considered taboo if they are in the context of its values.. And it also turned out that our society ended up going a lot further than we thought or feared.” As with legal gender recognition later, “where we fought a political battle, it’s even harder.”
He emphasized that, with regard to SYRIZA, “citizen rights, equal rights for all citizens are at the heart of our policies” and that “equal rights are the building blocks of an inclusive society, a society open to all its members, a society of true justice.” “. He commented that “as far as the otherwise liberal Mr. Mitsotakis is concerned, it is not yet the time for critical questions, critical statements from the LGBTI+ movement, as he told us recently.” He added that “he has been ruling for 4 years, but the time has not yet come. Neither for marriage, nor, of course, for procreation.
“So today I want to assure you that the time has finally come,” Mr. Tsipras continued, noting that “the victory of SYRIZA-PS in the elections on May 21st will pave the way for a progressive government” and “a progressive government with a body of SYRIZA-PS, institutionalizes marriage for all couples, regardless of gender, with full rights, as well as the right to have children.”
Alexis Tsipras noted that “for SYRIZA-PS, the issue of the claims of the LGBTI + movement is a matter of values and content”, and “reaching out to help each oppressed social group is a matter of both value and content”, to each social group that does not enjoy full rights, to every social group whose very life is in danger, as we are persistently reminded by the criminal acts that are forever imprinted in our memory. He expressed disgust at the news he said he had read this morning: “a racist attack that took place at the University of Patras against a transgender person. Shocking news.” “I wonder what country and what time we live in. What’s the matter? What have we done wrong, and new children behave this way? With so much fascism and so much accumulated hatred for the other? commented.
He said he also wonders “how much we ultimately need to change in our daily lives, in educational programs at school, in laws and in the behavior of authorities in relation to racist crimes, racist violence.” He emphasized that, on the other hand, he has a feeling that “important steps have been taken in Greek society in recent years, and in particular, young people are more aware of this attitude than before, and I think that when young people change, it’s slowly changing.” – slowly also the opinion that the whole society is looking at the problem”.
Concluding his greeting, Mr. Tsipras said that for SYRIZA, the fight for the rights of the LGBTI+ community “does not start or end in parliament and in legislative committees“. He noted that “in addition to the issues of marriage, we must also address the even more complex and equally important issues of visibility.” In particular, “discuss ways to take action that will address issues that, unfortunately, we have not talked about enough, such concepts as transphobia, which is not addressed and discussed in a proper way, or school bullying of LGBTQI + people.” .
In addition, according to him, “we have a duty, not only in central politics, but also in our daily lives, to fight and support our parents, children, and everyone who wants to end all forms of bullying.” “So that we do not experience racist hate crimes with impunity, as in the case of Jacques.. To stop this sad suicide rate,” he stressed.
Finally, Mr. Tsipras stressed that “we no longer need victims and martyrs, we need love and struggle. Love for people and fight for justice. And, of course, a plan for a radical and decisive policy that SYRIZA-PS intends to implement. A policy that will bring justice everywhere.”
