Elections: Priority for Koumunduru and 2nd Piraeus

A kind of field of fierce partisan confrontation is B’Piraeus constituency, where the parties fight not only for content, but also for impressions. The prime minister has already passed through the square Kyriakos MitsotakisPresident of SYRIZA Alexis Tsipras and PASOK President Nikos Androulakis, while the KKE makes its presence known with frequent events. This region has a number of features that make all political forces strive to achieve a significant presence here.

The second Piraeus includes them Municipalities of Keratsini – Drapetsona, Nicaea – Agios Ioannis Rentis, Korydallos, Perama and Salamina. From 1974 to the present day, he has nominated eight Members of Parliament in succession. The region is characterized by a strong presence of forces from the political center and the left. N.D. he managed to become the first power in this region only in the first two electoral contests of the post-colonial period, in 1974 and 1977. This was followed by almost three decades of PASOK dominance, which managed to take first place in 1981 and retained it until the elections of 2009. In fact, in two election contests, in 1981 and 1993, he won more than 50%.

The left has consistently recorded a high percentage in the area. In fact, the KKE managed to become the second party after PASOK in the European elections of 1981, gaining 24.21% and ahead of the ND. from 19.91%. The dynamics of the left is confirmed by the fact that in these elections the fourth party was the KKE Esotericou with 8.23%. And in the national elections, the KKE managed for a number of years, from 1974 to 1985, to take third place with percentages slightly above or below 20%. And the United Coalition maintained this momentum in the election campaign of 1989, but since 1990 a decrease in the percentage ratio has been recorded.

The big upheaval came in the 2012 elections, at the height of the financial crisis. SYRIZA won first place in May 2012 (23.85%), which it has since held in all election contests. In May 2012, the second party in Piraeus II was ANEL (12.40%), the third was KKE (12.29%), the fourth was N.D. (9.77%), and the fifth – “Golden Dawn” (9.49%). N.D. managed to regain second place in June 2012 and has been in the election competition ever since. In September 2015, Golden Dawn came in as a negative surprise, finishing in third place with a percentage of 8.40%. The far-right party managed to take third place in the 2014 European elections.

The assassination of Pavlos Fissas and the subsequent arrests of the leaders of the Golden Dawn gradually led to a decrease in its share in a particular region and the restoration of more traditional political balances for the region. In the 2019 elections, the KKE returned to third place, followed by PASOK and MeRA25.

In 2019, SYRIZA ranked first with a percentage of 38.22% and managed to elect three deputies. Nina Kasimati, Yannis Ragusis and Trifon Alexiadis. No major changes are expected in the opposition party’s official bulletin. Komunduru’s main goal is to keep the party in first place, which symbolically shows close contact with more popular social strata, and also serves as a narrative that SYRIZA has replaced PASOK in areas of its former dominance. From N.D. Dimitris Markopoulos and Yiannis Tragakis were elected in the 2nd Piraeus in the previous elections. Mr. Tragakis was quick to announce his retirement from politics and the appointment of his son to his position, prompting a backlash from management. Kyriakos Mitsotakis “suspended” his son Tragakis from participating in the elections, and the father decided to participate in the elections again. Giorgos Vrettakos and Michalis Livanos are expected to re-run for the ruling party.

The KKE elected Diamanto Manolaka in Piraeus II, who would again be a candidate. For PASOK, which seeks to strengthen its presence in the region and win back some of its old voters, the candidate will again be Dimitris Diamantidis, who was the first in the crosses in 2019. MeRA25, elected in the previous elections by Fotini Bakadimas, who left the parties and joined the SYRIZA parliamentary group. Eighth place in the region was taken by Hellenic Solution, which elected Sophia Asimakopoulou in 2019.
