Cyprus EEZ: Ankara and Section 6

ISTANBUL – ANSWER. Share on Behalf Turkish Cypriots from a Cypriot deposit to Plot 6 states the Turkish Energy Minister, Fatih Domezwhich nevertheless admits that its investigations Republic of Cyprus is outside the jurisdiction to which Turkey claims that its continental shelf reaches Fatih Donmez, speaking of investigations in Nicosia, stressed that “the 6th section (which is under investigation) is outside the jurisdiction of Turkey, but we would be mistaken if we saw Cyprus consist of only one side. Everyone who lives on the island of Cyprus has the right to use the resources. We believe that deals are not fair when they ignore the other side.”

Ankara claims that its continental shelf extends to areas extending to the northwestern margin of Block 6. Finally, Mr. Donmez added that “we will continue our exploration and drilling activities in the Mediterranean Sea on our own continental shelf in areas of our jurisdiction . This process continues as part of the operational plan.”

The Turkish Energy Minister is demanding a share of the profits to be made from the field on behalf of the Turkish Cypriots.

Recall that last week the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry of Cyprus announced the successful and successful completion of work on exploration drilling “Zeus-1” within Block 6 Exclusive economic zone of the Republic of Cyprus, a consortium of Eni and TotalEnergies. Meanwhile, the discovery of a new natural gas field with a volume of 58 billion cubic meters in the Black Sea was announced Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The Turkish President said that the cost of Black Sea natural gas on international markets has reached $1 trillion. Mr. Erdogan stressed that Ankara will intensify its research efforts in Mediterranean Sea. However, Turkey’s talks with the US regarding the F-16 hit a snag as, according to the Turkish newspaper Sabah, US officials demanded payment for the parking of F-35s in hangars that were not delivered to Turkey due to CAATSA sanctions. This request angered the Turkish side, which is demanding compensation for the damage suffered by the Turkish defense industry as a result of the F-35 co-production program. According to analysts, such differences will cause new delays in the issue of modernization of the F-16.

Finally, it is noted that the mayors of various European cities, including Kostas Bakoyanniswill visit Istanbul today to participate in an event to be organized at the City Hall on the theme “Cities: Democracy and Development”. This move is considered their practical support for Ekrem Imamoglu. The mayors of Athens, Hannover, Paris and Florence, as well as the general secretary of the European network Eurocities, will discuss the central role and cooperation of cities in matters that, among other things, concern the defense of democracy and the rule of law.

Expansion of research from Egypt

Egypt has begun expanding research into the extraction of oil or natural gas from areas on earth as well as within its continental shelf. In particular, according to the country’s state news agency, the Egyptian government has announced a new international competition for the right to conduct research in the Nile Delta and the Mediterranean Sea. There are a total of 12 land and sea areas for which interested parties are invited to submit proposals. The application deadline has been set for April 30, 2023. The expansion of exploration areas by the Egyptian government is based on the calculation that the chances of even larger deposits in the bowels of the largest Arab country are very significant. Egypt, from being completely dependent on energy imports a decade ago, has grown into a huge export power in the natural gas sector. Egypt’s proven reserves are estimated at 63 trillion cubic feet.
