Meimarakis on Qatargate: “Those who betrayed your hopes and your voice, I assure you they will be punished”

A summary of the opinions expressed at the meetings of the competent bodies in the European Parliament from last Saturday to today, is given in his statement, which is accompanied by a corresponding video, the vice-president of the Parliamentary Group of the European People’s Party in EP, Vangelis Meimarakis.

According to the statement, Mr. Meimarakis argued that “individual events and behavior should not cast a shadow on the image of the institution of the European Parliament and all MEPs” who “honestly and humbly serve the European citizen who entrusted them with his voice.” in doing so, he also mentioned “the risk of strengthening the enemies of democracy and Europe who lie in wait”, emphasizing that “the (European) Democracy Parliament is not blackmailed, intimidated or bribed”.

In addition, among other things, he emphasized the “positive message, big and loud”, as he says, that “when Democracy, the rule of law and institutions work, all this is exposed and those who commit lawlessness are held accountable. So those who betrayed your hopes, dreams and vote, I assure you that they will be punished, the knife will reach the bone, everything will be revealed and those who dare to do something similar in the future, you can be sure that they will suffer the same fate.”

“Now it is necessary for those of us who have a European consciousness, a European dream, a European vision, European ideas, and those who believe that problems require a European solution, to fight the battle with hard work, honesty and humility in order to maintain the confidence of citizens and move forward towards a better future, a better tomorrow that we deserve,” concludes Mr. Meimarakis in his speech.

“The sad and tragic revelations of the past few days in the European Parliament have created a sense of insecurity and frustration for all of us, especially for the citizens of Europe, because they have a brutal effect on this institution.

This is a difficult issue that we must deal with soberly and calmly, especially at this critical time.

Therefore, we must not allow individual events and the behavior of individuals to tarnish the image of the institution as a whole and the MEPs as a whole. The European Parliament is a multilingual, multi-party, multi-ethnic body and as MEPs we represent you, who have shown us their trust with the cross of preference to serve you honestly and modestly in Europe and meet your expectations.

Enemies of Democracy and Europe today rejoice and lie in wait, and there is a great risk of strengthening extreme and anti-democratic sentiments. They seek to increase the disillusionment and alienation of European citizens from European institutions. And we must not allow this, especially in times of war, energy crisis, inflation and instability.

But there is also a positive message, loud and clear. When Democracy, the rule of law and institutions work, all this is brought to light and those who commit lawlessness are held accountable. So those who betrayed your hopes, dreams and vote, I assure you that they will be punished, the knife will reach the bone, everything will be revealed and those who dare to do something similar in the future, you can be sure that they will be the same fate.

That is why we continue to maintain our faith and optimism in institutions and in a united Europe. Parliament here is above parties and national interests, it is united, it is stable, it is not blackmailed, it is not intimidated, it is never bribed with questions of Democracy.

Now, for those of us who have a European conscience, a European dream, a European vision, European ideas and who believe that problems require a European solution, it is necessary to fight the battle with hard work, honesty and humility in order to maintain the confidence of citizens and move forward towards a better future, for the better tomorrow we deserve.”
