Anastasiades: International law is not interpreted the way Erdogan thinks

In her stable and positive attitude EUROPE. against Turkish actions to modernize the pseudo-state, noted its president Cypriot Democracy Nikos Anastasiadesnoting that such an attitude is fully in line with international law.

In a speech to reporters today, after a memorial service for former President of the Republic Glaukos Clerides, at the Holy Church of Hagia Sophia in Nicosia, Mr. Anastasiades called for comment on the Turkish Foreign Ministry’s reports on the European Commission’s attitude towards Turkey’s efforts to modernize the pseudo-state – he said that “more What should be taken into account is not the reaction of the President of Turkey, but the firm and positive position of the European Union, which is a position of principle, absolutely in accordance with international law and the UN Charter. If Mr. Erdogan didn’t like it, that’s his problem. International law is not interpreted in accordance with the opinion of Mr. Erdogan.”

To a journalist’s remark that provocations continue with deeds and words, as the Turkish President states that he will work to include a pseudo-state in the organization of Turkic states, Mr. Anastasiades said that “I think he tried and finally got the answer that the only regime that can be accepted by the illegally occupied territory of Cyprus is as a whole. Therefore, we react, reactions bring results, the reaction of the EU. was one of many responses. So that’s important.”

Asked what messages he would convey to the representative of the United Nations, Mr. Miroslav Etsia, when he met him next week, the Cypriot President said: β€œI will repeat to him all the efforts that have been made since 2017, that is, during the shipwreck of the Cran- Montana before and recently, memorandums, meetings with G.G., envoys of G.G., Mrs. Luth, the consensus that prevailed in Berlin so that the dialogue could be resumed, someone will later be appointed who, as an expert representative of G. G. to find common ground that would allow resuming a substantive dialogue to resolve the Cyprus issue. I will remind him of the confidence building measures that will provide fertile ground over the years because I hear a lot. Our side has not been idle. There was a firm Turkish stance to achieve the long-standing and long-established goal of either partitioning Cyprus or controlling the entire Republic of Cyprus or the Federal Republic of Cyprus if efforts to reach a solution were successful.”

Recall that on Friday, the Greek Foreign Ministry in its statement condemned the statements of Turkish officials regarding granting observer status to the pseudo-state in the Organization of Turkic States.

Turkey believes that this decision is an initial, small step towards the recognition of the “TRNC” as an independent state, which Ankara has long claimed.

Athens and Nicosia view the granting of observer status to the pseudo-state of the Organization of Turkic States as an extremely worrisome development.

Turkey’s statements regarding the participation of a pseudo-state with observer status in the Organization of Turkic States was condemned by the EU representative responsible for foreign policy issues Peter Stano.

For its part, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said that β€œthe international community should abandon its position that the Greek Cypriot side is the sole owner of the island and recognize the β€œTRNC”.
