Tsunis: Greece and Turkey should resolve their differences through diplomacy

“The basic principle is that Greece and Turkey should discuss and resolve their differences through diplomacy and in accordance with international law. There is no other option, ”said the US ambassador to Greece. George Tsunis, emphasizing that “a lot is at stake. You are both very respected allies and very important members of NATO. But these issues are extremely serious and important.”

In an interview with ANT1, Mr. Tsunis noted that “I understand the rhetoric. Nobody sees it as constructive. The only thing that will bring results is the discussion and resolution of differences through diplomacy and in accordance with international law.”

“We constantly call on Greece and Turkey to do just that, because I know that both Greece and Turkey are striving for peace. There are differences in many respects. But in this case, the primary principle is peace, and it can only be achieved through diplomacy,” he said.

As he stressed, “We have been extremely consistent. We believe that honing rhetoric is neither constructive nor productive. We firmly believe that both of our NATO allies must resolve their differences through diplomacy. This is the right way and it will remain the right way.”

Mr. Tsunis noted that his concern is to ensure that relations between the US and Greece are as strong and productive as possible.

When asked whether Greece would be left alone in the event of an unprovoked attack, he replied: “The Greek army is capable of defending the homeland. But as the US Ambassador, the US will work tirelessly for peace. We will continue to encourage both of our NATO allies to choose diplomatic channels to resolve their differences. These differences are not unique and can be fixed. I hope that in the near future the existing disagreements between Greece and Turkey will be resolved through diplomatic channels.”
