The Minister of Immigration and Asylum spoke of the need to fight and crack down on gangs of human traffickers, Notis Mitarakisduring his meeting with the President of his General Assembly UNChampa Korosi, in New York.

Referring to the Turkish provocation and the recent incident of 92 migrants found by Frontex and the Greek authorities naked in EuroMr. Mitarakis named her Turkey to defend their borders and to provide, if necessary, international protection in accordance with international law.

After meeting with the President of the UN General Assembly, Mr. Mitarakis said that current challenges were discussed, with both sides paying particular attention to the situation in Ukraine and the climate crisis.

As he noted, “factors influencing migration flows, which require concerted actions to eliminate the causes of migration, coordinated humanitarian actions. At the same time, however, we must fight smuggling as well as attempts to exploit human suffering.”

“Greece, in accordance with international law, saves people every day on land and at sea. Accepts asylum seekers in decent living conditions. Protects unaccompanied minors. Integration programs operate here, a strict but fair immigration policy is being implemented. Greece is doing its duty. However, he does not accept attempts to instrumentalize immigration, as we saw at the recent General Assembly of the President of Turkey,” said Mr. Mitarakis and concluded:

“Turkey must protect its borders and, if necessary, provide international protection in accordance with international law. In particular, he must avoid incidents such as the recent one involving 92 migrants who were found naked by Frontex and the Greek authorities and driven off by neighboring authorities. Immigration is an issue that we must address with respect for human life, the obligations of states, international law. The problem we must face in international cooperation, protecting our borders and at the same time fighting gangs of human traffickers.”
