Athens weighs the pros and cons of the US-Turkish front

An important part of the tension weighing down Greek-Turkish in recent months this is due to the parallel difficulties that distinguish the relationship between Washington and to Anchor.

special relationship Erdogan – Putin. and its many ramifications, the inconvenience of the Turks in connection with the persuasion of the Americans to participate in the Western sanctions against RussiaArbitrary Turkish movements in northern Syria and Iraq are issues that are perceived through the prism of US foreign policy and not known for its “anti-Turkism”, State Department.

Ankara, following the line drawn by Recep Tayyip Erdogan, uses this rhetoric, which revives the syndrome of the Ottoman historical environment, classifying Greece as a “near abroad” power that is Washington’s “pawns” to prevent the expansion of Turkish influence in its region.

These are, of course, opinions that quite often remind us of everything that is constantly broadcast from Russia. Thus, it seems that Mr. Erdogan wants to keep the Greek-Turkish relations as another tool of pressure to extract concessions from Washington.

However, Greece benefits from these developments in the long term and strategically. First of all, the United States uses the territory of Greece to serve its own and its strategic needs. NATO. Alexandroupolis, as a bypass of the straits and a vital artery for strengthening NATO forces in the Balkans and Eastern Europe, is perhaps the clearest example of the importance Hellas.

It should not be forgotten that in this context, through Mutual Defense Cooperation Agreement (MDCA)significant funds are allocated by Congress for long-term investments in infrastructure used not only by the US Armed Forces, but also by the Greek.

The Americans, moreover, feel comfortable using Greek soil for operations of high operational importance. Next month, MQ-9 drones will land – for the umpteenth time – in Larisa, in the infrastructure of the 110th Fighter Wing, adapted for this with American funds. These drones will practically carry out surveillance missions on the Ukrainian front, flying as far as Romania and the Black Sea.

Ankara is upping its tone to woo concessions from Washington, but in the long run Greece is benefiting from what is happening.

The importance of the concentration of American investments by large American companies (Pfizer, Digital Realty, Cisco, Google, Amazon, Microsoft) that prefer Greece should not be underestimated, although there were other regional solutions. If you add to the equation of Greek-American relations the excellent relationship that is being cultivated politically between Athens and Washington, it becomes clear that the US will eventually invest in Greece.
