The two main points of the letter, which the Home Office believes are based on a proposal submitted by Prime Minister Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakisin March to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, as follows:

  1. Establishing a ceiling on the wholesale natural gas market.
  2. With the help of the European regulation, to define a new index to which the price of natural gas in long-term contracts will be linked.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the proposals were formulated after many hours of negotiations between the five ministers, which began on the evening of Tuesday, October 11, during the informal Energy Council, and completed some time ago in the spirit of constructive cooperation.

Environment and Energy Minister Kostas Skrekas made the following statement: “The joint letter we sent to the European Commission with my other four colleagues is an important positive step in Europe’s efforts to overcome the energy crisis together. The proposal by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, which has been presented to the Chairman of the Commission since March, has become a guideline for finding an effective solution. I am optimistic that the final decisions will be made in time so that a united Europe can strongly support its citizens in the face of a difficult winter.”

The letter also highlights 6 actions that can be carried out in parallel, namely: joint natural gas supplies from EU countries, optimization of natural gas storage, strengthening energy diplomacy in relation to reliable natural gas suppliers, development of a new price index that will better reflect the market, save energy and accelerate renewable energy sources.
