​School uniform may again become mandatory in pre-university education. AUR has introduced a bill to the Senate in this regard, arguing that it would strengthen the sense of community and also have benefits in terms of student safety.

According to the project, each school unit, through the board of directors, will establish a model uniform and insignia.

In addition, the models will be sent to the General Directorate of the Police of the Municipality of Bucharest or the District Police Inspectorate and the General Directorate of the Gendarmerie of the Municipality of Bucharest or the District Inspectorate of the Gendarmerie.

What does the initiative to amend the law mean? Law no. 35/2007 on improving security in educational institutions, submitted by AUR:

  • “(1) In public and private pre-university education, students are required to wear school uniforms.
  • (2) For each school division, uniform samples and insignia are established by the administrative board together with the professorial councils in agreement with student representatives and with the consent of the parents’ representative council.
  • (3) In order to purchase a school uniform, depending on the financial situation of the family or legal guardians, students may be granted social assistance for its purchase upon application.
  • (4) Scholarships are provided annually from the state budget from the value-added tax amounts approved for these purposes through the local budgets of administrative-territorial units.
  • (5) The methodology and general criteria for awarding social scholarships to students of pre-university education, provided for in part (3), are developed by the Ministry of Education.
  • (6) Samples of uniforms and insignia provided for in paragraph (2) will be submitted to the General Directorate of the Police of the Municipality of Bucharest or the District Police Inspectorate and the General Directorate of the Gendarmerie of the Municipality of Bucharest or the District Inspectorate of the Gendarmerie.”
