
Member of the European Parliament Victor Negrescu received the support of a significant number of members of the European Parliament to demand the representatives of the EU Council and the European Commission to urgently present the accession calendar. European officials are also being asked to clarify whether the extension of the European free movement zone will be put to a vote in December.
“With this initiative, the European Parliament once again demonstrates that it is the European institution that consistently supports Romania’s accession to the Schengen zone. (…) This approach is a continuation of the petition that I submitted and which was discussed by the European legislative body, as well as the resolutions adopted in this regard,” said the representative of Romania in the European Parliament, MEP Victor Negrescu.
More than 50 MEPs from all pro-European political groups supported the move in order to fulfill the technical criterion to trigger a specific parliamentary procedure and, as a result, hold a debate in the European Parliament plenary session.
MEP Victor Negrescu recently initiated the #RomaniaDeservesSchengen campaign, which in the first half of the year reached out to all European leaders who can influence the decision on Romania’s accession to the Schengen area, and messages of support are currently pouring in across the country. are gathering for this purpose, sent by Romanians through tens of thousands of postcards provided by the organizers and which will be kept at the headquarters of the Council.
