On Thursday, at a joint session, the Parliament voted to create a Special Commission on Amendments to Laws on Justice. The abolition of the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (MCV) and Romania’s entry into Schengen are subject to the adoption of laws on justice. In addition, the adoption of justice laws is an important milestone for Romania in the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan).

Chuke’s government adopted three laws on justice a week ago, which were criticized by part of the system and civil society. New justice laws were drafted by the government to correct the pernicious changes made to the management of the PSD.

Prime Minister Nicolae Chuke said the process by which these laws were drawn up was “an example of maturity and responsibility for all institutions involved”, while Justice Minister Katelin Predoyu spoke of “consolidating the independence of the judiciary” through the new regulations.

Instead, the Association of Magistrates speaks of “compromising some progress achieved in the fight against corruption and organized crime.”

Three associations of magistrates who say that “European partners are being deceived without any restrictions by the Minister of Justice, in an insidious and never-ending game”, as many of the harmful changes criticized by international bodies in recent years are maintained.
