The White House may recommend that US companies cut back on business with Turkey if Ankara and Moscow enter into a “formal economic partnership”, Politico newspaper reported on Wednesday, Aug. 17, citing a US government source.
“We think Turkey should be a global hub for attracting business and capital, but close relations with Russia will create real risks for Turkey’s integration with the rest of the world,” the source said. According to him, in the event of closer ties between Turkey and Russia, Ankara may be banned from making payments in dollars.
Cooperation between Turkey and Russia
Turkish and Russian Presidents Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Vladimir Putin held talks in Sochi on August 6. According to Erdogan, it was decided to switch to trade in national currencies and increase the annual turnover of trade between countries to US$100 billion. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said the Turkish side had also agreed to partially pay Russian gas in rubles.
Previously, the United States imposed sanctions against Turkey for cooperation with Russia in the field of armaments. Turkey buys Russian-made S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems. In this sense, the United States excluded Turkey from the F-35 fighter production program.
