WP: FBI Searched Trump’s House for Documents on Nuclear Weapons

During a search of former US President Donald Trump’s Florida residence, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) officials were looking for, among other things, confidential documents related to nuclear weapons. This was reported on Thursday, August 11, by The Washington Post (WP), citing sources familiar with the investigation.

The publication’s interlocutors did not provide additional details about the content of the materials searched. In particular, it is unclear whether they were talking about US or some other country’s nuclear weapons. They also did not say whether such documents were found during the search.

Justice Department asks court to release search warrant

The US Department of Justice asked the court on Aug. 11 to release documents that allowed the FBI to conduct a search of Trump’s home. The decision was made “in light of the former president’s public confirmation of the search, the circumstances surrounding it and the significant public interest in the matter,” Attorney General Merrick Garland told a news conference. He also indicated that he personally approved the decision to carry out investigative actions.

Trump said he would not interfere with the publication of the warrant and the list of seized documents. “Not only will I not oppose the release of these documents… I will go even further by calling for the immediate release of these documents,” he wrote in his Truth Social.

Search of Donald Trump’s Florida home

On August 8, FBI agents came unannounced to search former US President Mar-a-Lago’s Florida home. Trump said agents broke into his safe. Trump himself was in New York at the time of the search. The politician believes that in this way “far-left Democrats” are trying to stop him from running for president in 2024.

The FBI did not comment on the possible reasons for the search of the former president’s home. However, American media, citing sources close to the investigation, report that the reason for the court-sanctioned search may be secret documents Trump took with him when he left the White House, despite having been transferred to the National Archives.

White House Document Boxes on Trump’s Property

In February, the National Archives confirmed that it had seized 15 boxes of documents from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. Among them were Trump’s official correspondence with North Korean ruler Kim Jong-un, as well as a letter left in the Oval Office by Trump’s predecessor, Barack Obama.

By law, the president’s records after the end of his term must be transferred to the National Archives. The return of the boxes of documents raised questions about Trump’s compliance with the Presidential Records Act. The National Archives then demanded that the Department of Justice launch an investigation into the former president’s actions.
