Explosion threat remains at the site of a Berlin fire

A major fire at an ammunition and pyrotechnics depot in the Grunewald district of west Berlin that started the day before has all but extinguished, but the isolated area, where there is a threat of further explosions, remains a major problem. Firefighting work was successfully carried out last night, while small pockets of ignition still exist inside the cordon, Thomas Kirstein, a fire service spokesman, said on air for television and radio company RBB in the morning. of Friday, August 5th.

Cordon zone is being scanned by robots and armored vehicles

According to him, the total area of the fire was about 42 hectares. Equipment from all over Germany was brought to the scene of the fire, about 150 firefighters are involved in extinguishing it. On the morning of August 5, special equipment arrived, which will be involved in surveying the territory inside the cordon ring – three remotely controlled robots, as well as armored vehicles for firefighting work, noted Kirshtein. At the same time, the rising wind poses a threat of re-ignitions, he added. Meanwhile, the fire department said on Twitter that more explosions and flying debris can be expected.

Firefighters expressed hope that on August 5 it will be possible to open the adjacent highway and restore train traffic to the surrounding areas. According to Kirstein, it depends on how long you can get data on the situation at the scene of the explosions. In extinguishing a fire in Grunewald, none of the firefighters were injured.

On the eve of the warehouse in Grunewald, where, among other things, ammunition and pyrotechnic articles are stored, a serious fire broke out. Due to the explosions and debris that followed, the fire brigades did not begin to extinguish for several hours, work only began in the early evening. Rescue services cordoned off the area to a radius of 1000 m. The nearest residential buildings are located at least two kilometers from the site. The authorities have asked residents of the German capital to avoid the appearance of a fire in the area as much as possible and also not to visit the Grunewald forest, the warning is also valid on August 5. Firefighters watered the surrounding forest areas to stop the flames from spreading further.
