In a context where Europe is facing an uncertain situation regarding gas supply, the PSD calls again for the regulation of the energy market. The Social Democrats demand that this topic be discussed again in the Coalition, but Romania cannot leave the free gas market without at least consulting its European partners.

The PSD claims that it is necessary to resume discussions at the level of the government coalition on the application of energy and gas price regulation in Romania for a limited period. The Social Democrats are back with this request from the beginning of the year and say that economic and social reality demands it.

“The market is deeply distorted and does not offer financially sustainable options for the economy, which means additional costs that are passed on to the prices of products for the public. PSD specialists are closely following the developments in Europe, where more and more important voices from the economy claim that after 30 years of liberalization, in the current critical context, energy security cannot be entrusted to the markets!”, PSD claims. in a press statement.

PSD cites the fact that France is nationalizing EDF, France’s largest utility, and Germany has passed the necessary legislation for state takeovers of companies in difficulty.

“We believe that it is time for the coalition partners to realize that the liberalization of the energy market, an operation carried out during the right-wing government of 2020-2021, was a massive failure that only brought Romanians a series of price increases. (…) This is a decision that can give more space to the Government so that people and the economy have and can afford to pay for heat, electricity and fuel in the winter,” the press release states.

In the current context, European leaders are trying to find solutions to meet gas needs in winter. Any decision regarding the changes of the European country in the energy market must be announced and discussed both within the country and at the European level.

We remind you that the government limited energy prices until March 2023. The PSD has been in direct conflict with the PNL and the energy minister over energy prices, with the Social Democrats repeatedly demanding a return to a state-regulated market.
