I am really afraid of this Eva (History of the century), a 2010 film directed by Adrian Popovici, was written not with the intention of highlighting the pros or possible cons of the artistic product, but with the desire to provide as many details as possible about the scandal regarding the film rights and legal status of tenebros script written by Radu-Aneste Petrescu, Adrian Popovici and by Steve Attridge.
The film begins with Radu Tudoran’s novel. First published in 1947 under the title The return of the prodigal sonlater republished with a slightly changed name prodigal son. The heirs of the writer, i.e. the copyright (Diana Turconi-Bubenek, Daniela Cora and Cristina Cora), accused the production house (FILMS OF ROMANIA) that they would go to the script and screenplay without having all the legal rights, and reproached the writers and director that they would seriously compromise the quality of Radu Tudoran’s writing. That they’d done away with the charm, the ineffability of the characters, and that they’d over-rely on commercials, soap operas, even vulgar ones. Adrian Popovici, who in this case was a sort of Sergio Nicolaescu (and director, and co-writer of the script, and co-producer, and co-composer of the music), gave all sorts of excuses, the most important of which was the fact that what in Eva there would be very little left prodigal son. The main character is no longer Tudor, an American with countless connections in the American special services, but Eva. Who falls in love with him, runs away from home for him when he was only 16 years old, who also accepts his love and the mysteries of whimsical departures and returns, but always guided by another man, who marries and then divorces a very rich baron and incredibly generous Oswald von Seele, who, after finally parting with the Tudors, spent time on the train platform, during the war and during the bombing, recalls his story.
In 2008, production was halted by a court order, thus receiving a brief respite, which was used to change some parts of the script. This is how (probably also for financial reasons) the role that would have been played by Vanessa Redgrave came about. However, the premiere took place in 2010, criticism was not received too favorably, on the contrary, there were frankly cruel chronicles (the most often cited – Andrii Gorzo, who also wrote in An old dilemma) also went on trial, and the final verdict was not at all in favor of the manufacturers.
What can you find fault with the film? First, the epidermal treatment of the object. Nothing is in-depth, nothing is detailed, the film has what can be called an alternation of nodes and catalysts. Everything is presented in the same, frankly monotonous way, in clearly commercial packaging. Saw and wished in this way. And the love story between Tudor and Eve (Vincent Regan, the actor chosen for this role, seemed a little old to me when he played Eve, Amy Beth Hayes just struck me as young, beautiful and decorative), and the presence in the cast of two outstanding actors – Michael Ironside (Alphonse) and Patrick Bergin (Oswald), who are not even playing the best roles in their creative portfolio – and an accumulation of fabulous interiors, horses and luxury cars (set design by Cristian Niculescu ), and speaks mostly in English, although the action takes place almost entirely in Bucharest, and the film has episodic, rather irrelevant appearances by Maia Morgenstern, Andrii Finzi, Claudio Bleonta and Vlad Radescu, a situation that made me remember the famous saying We give horses fashionable at the time Dacian and Column they are consumed with the desire to break the deal. Short, working with actors was a form. A horse has a muzzle. Nothing, no evolution is needed. Some even fall into mockery. As, for example, in the hysterical scene of Betty (Emily Hamilton). This is followed by a lie in which Maya Morgenstern develops as if she is playing in House of Bernarda Alba. It obviously takes time, walks, discussions, confessions are overextended, there is a lot of driving and silliness, the director is nostalgic for big productions Eastmancolor.
